Soul and Art

March 18, 2010

It may be posited that people have pursued transcendence through various approaches, many through religion, but also through art.  It seems that the epiphany of each involves God but also Beauty, as beauty is found in art.  There perhaps are parallels between the soul and art.

The soul is to the body as art is to its physical media: paint, marble, strings.  Soul and art are the height of creation.  And man strives to wring out of art an ascension to the level of soul, but it is a transcendence very elusive.

Soul and great art exceed their associated media: cells, heart, paint, marble.  The media is a necessity, but the value is in the “form” which seems to be appreciated only in the highest portion of the mind.

What can we say but that the soul speaks to another soul in two ways–through the gift of art and the gift of physical nurture.  Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and Mother Teresa in Calcutta were speaking to souls, each at the highest level.  It remains to be seen what the 21st Century expression of such will consist of.
